Let the Spring Be-Gin: 5 New Flavoured Gins to Add to Your Collection

Flavoured Gins are having a moment here in the UK. It feels like there’s a new flavoured addition to the supermarket Gin shelves at least once a week. For a long time, flavoured Gins were home-made, or saccharin-sweet incarnations which barely resembled proper Gin.

Let’s be clear; flavoured Gins must still taste like Gin (and therefore juniper). Anything else is simply flavoured Vodka. The other factor to consider is the ABV - if it’s not 37.5% or above, it’s likely a liqueur (such as Sloe Gin). Gin-based liqueurs are delicious, and definitely have their place at the table, but that’s not what we’re talking about here.

Every Gin in this list is most definitely a Gin, which simply heroes another flavour (or flavours) alongside juniper. What better way to launch into the new season than with some fresh flavours to brighten up your booze cabinet?!

1. Malfy Gin Rosa

Malfy Gin Rosa is made with Sicilian pink grapefruit, Italian rhubarb and juniper. It’s fresh, zesty and rich. The palest pink hue looks gorgeous, and the liquid tastes damn good, too.

Serving suggestion: Try it with classic tonic and pink grapefruit garnish.

2. An Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin

While this Gin isn’t marketed as a Gin with a single flavour, I had to include it, because when you taste it, you’ll see what I mean.

This Gin is a “Gin of the sea”, made with various kinds of seaweed; sugar kelp, dulse, carrageen moss and dúlamán. The result is a fresh, salty, umami flavoured drink.

It’s slightly floral on the nose, and there’s a peppery flavour to it, too. For fans of complex Gins, this one is for you.

Serving suggestion: A Martini with a twist of lemon peel.

3. York Gin Cocoa

Made through vapour distillation, rather than infusing the cocoa beans, keeps the Gin clear in colour and maximises flavour. The fruity cocoa beans complement the juniper flavours of the Gin, creating a complex liquid with a subtle chocolate aroma.

Serving suggestion: Over ice.

4. Tarquin’s Rhubarb and Raspberry Gin

The latest in a long line of limited edition flavours, Tarquin’s Rhubarb and Raspberry Gin is made by distilling the flagship Cornish Gin with the freshest raspberries and rhubarb they can lay their hands on.

If that doesn’t take your fancy, try their British Blackberry Gin which uses the same spirit base before blackberries are infused and the Gin is cut with de-mineralized Cornish spring water to bring it down to the desired 38% ABV. Just before bottling, they add a touch of Cornish wildflower honey for some rounded sweetness and balance.

Serving suggestion: Neat. It needs nothing more.

5. Makar Cherry Gin

The latest product from the Glasgow Distillery Company, Makar Cherry Gin is made by soaking juicy cherries and pink peppercorns in Makar Original Dry Gin, before pressing them to release maximum flavour.

On the nose it’s warming, spiced and cherry led, with a ripe cherry and citrus palate.
